Root canal therapy can be a daunting idea for many individuals, as it is often done to save a natural tooth from extraction. Many think it is painful, but it actually alleviates pain for those with an infection or inflammation. This procedure is commonly done at Shine Dental Arts of Phoenix, Arizona, and is sometimes referred to as “endodontic treatment” or “root canal therapy.” Our team can talk to you about the process so there are no surprises during your dental appointment!
What are the five steps involved in root canal therapy?
- Diagnosis and treatment planning. The first step involved in root canal therapy is diagnosing the problem. This includes a thorough examination of the tooth, including X-rays, to decide the extent of damage and whether root canal treatment is necessary. Once it has been determined that a root canal is needed, a treatment plan will be created based on the individual’s unique situation.
- Access and preparation. Once the treatment plan has been established, the next step is to access the inside of the tooth. This involves creating an opening in the top of the natural tooth in order to reach the pulp chamber and canals where infection or inflammation may be present. The tooth is cleaned out and shaped to prepare it for the actual treatment.
- Cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system. Once access has been gained to the root canal system, the dentist will use specialized tools to clean out any infected or inflamed tissue and remove bacteria and debris from the canals. This step is crucial in ensuring that all sources of infection are eliminated before proceeding with filling and sealing.
- Filling and sealing. After the canals have been thoroughly cleaned, treated, and disinfected, they are filled with a rubber-like material known as gutta-percha, which is used to seal the canals and prevent any further infection. The opening in the tooth is then sealed off with either a temporary or a permanent dental filling, depending on the individual’s situation.
- Follow-up care and restoration. The final step in root canal therapy involves follow-up care and tooth restoration. This may include scheduling a follow-up appointment to ensure appropriate healing and monitor for any potential risks or complications. In cases where extensive damage has occurred, a crown or other type of restoration may be needed to protect and strengthen the tooth.
